Timing Chain Troubles in Your GM Crossover SUV?

Great Car. Dead Engine.

Don’t Worry. I Have a Plan that Works.

You are not alone in your timing chain troubles. The solutions are harder to come by. Timing chains usually stretch in GM Acadias, Chevy Traverses, Buick Enclaves, and Saturn Outlooks. If you don’t have the problem, you are likely the exception, rather than the rule.

But what do you do after you’ve invested in and paid off your car? Do you let it sit on the blocks until you can replace the engine? Or do you do what it takes to get it back on the road? If you can change your oil, we can guide you in your engine swap. You should be able to get more life out of the vehicle you’ve already invested so much in.

Start with our Perfect Engine Removal Tools List.

Who’s to Blame?

Are timing chain failures due to owner maintenance or manufacturer error? Irregular oil changes can damage your timing. Then there’s the fact that the oil gauges on the 2008-2010 GM Crossover SUVs were set to 8,000 miles per oil change, though you could run out of oil by 5,000 miles. GM blamed customers for negligence on this score, but after many complaints, they recalled the cars to change the oil gauge. However, the timing chain failure continued.

What to Do?

Timing chains are supposed to last the life of the vehicle. They should never need replacement in order to maintain the car. If the timing chain breaks, the piston and valve will collide. This will damage the cylinder head, valve, piston, and/or camshaft. These are very expensive to repair or replace. You’d be better off with either an engine replacement or trading your car in for a new one. Good luck selling a broken car.
